Prominent critics of the U.S. for-profit healthcare system, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), welcomed billionaire Elon Musk's recent critique of the nation's exorbitant healthcare spending. They extended an invitation for Musk—nominated to serve as head of the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the incoming Trump administration—to join the push for a Medicare for All system.

Musk's social media post spotlighted U.S. healthcare inefficiency, sharing a chart from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation that revealed the nation's per capita administrative healthcare costs reached $1,055 in 2020, far exceeding those of other wealthy countries like Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. "Shouldn't the American people be getting their money's worth?" Musk asked.

Senator Sanders responded emphatically, reiterating his long-standing criticism of a system that leaves millions uninsured or underinsured. "We waste hundreds of billions of dollars annually on administrative expenses that enrich insurance CEOs and shareholders," Sanders said. "Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. We need Medicare for All."

Representative Jayapal, who spearheaded the reintroduction of Medicare for All legislation, added, "The solution to our healthcare crisis is clear. It’s called Medicare for All."

Musk’s Role in the Trump Administration

As Musk prepares to lead DOGE, an agency President-elect Donald Trump aims to establish to reduce government inefficiencies, Sanders acknowledged some alignment in objectives. “Cutting wasteful expenditures should include addressing the staggering inefficiencies in our healthcare system,” Sanders stated. He highlighted a 2020 report from the Republican-led Congressional Budget Office, which found that transitioning to a single-payer healthcare system could save the U.S. $650 billion annually, thanks to Medicare’s 2% administrative costs compared to private insurers’ 17%.

Rising Frustrations with For-Profit Insurance

The public's frustration with the healthcare system has been growing, fueled by controversies such as Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield's recent reversal of a policy limiting payments for extended surgical anesthesia. Advocacy groups like National Nurses United have amplified calls for systemic reform, urging leaders like Musk to support single-payer systems that have proven more efficient globally.

David Sirota of The Lever suggested that DOGE could eliminate private health insurance bureaucracy in favor of Medicare for All, aligning efficiency goals with improved healthcare access. "Replacing the profit-driven health insurance industry with Medicare for All would not only save billions but also prioritize patients over profits," Sirota noted.

Public and Professional Outcry

The killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week brought renewed focus to the deep dissatisfaction with for-profit insurers. This incident, coupled with Anthem's policy controversy, underscored widespread anger at a system seen as prioritizing profits over patients’ well-being.

National Nurses United summarized the stakes succinctly: "The most efficient healthcare systems are single-payer systems. It’s time for the U.S. to catch up."

As debate over healthcare reform continues, Sanders and Jayapal hope Musk’s newfound interest in addressing inefficiencies can help build momentum for Medicare for All, a policy that promises to transform the lives of millions of Americans.
